Chris’s background…

“My main interest in photography are the things I find odd, quirky, or just the things make me smile ... usually that involves people but not always. I have won the amateur section of The Documentary Photographer of the Year and been a finalist in the Wanderlust Travel Photo of the Year. I am heavily involved with Bridport Camera Club, an encouraging home to photography of all genres and a place where we engage with community projects.”

Chris’s inspiration…

“A book that I think is particularly relevant to the Bridport Lockdown project is 'Modern Colour' by 'Fred Herzog'. For twenty nine years he shot two rolls of film a week in his adopted home of Vancouver, he found beauty in the utterly mundane and it is that record of the ordinary that is now so interesting. They are pictures taken from the inside, from someone who knew the place where he lived ... it was the wonderfully witty French photographer, Doisneau, who remarked that his own work was taken up with the spectacle of 'that gratuitous, never-ending show for which no ticket is needed' ... and, for me, it is in Herzog that embodies that sentiment.

Fred Herzog's photographs of the ordinary have matured over time into a wonderful, historical document. The mundane has become nostalgic, a view of a world that has passed, and we can only hope that Bridport Lockdown provides future generations with images of a time that passed quickly.”
